Top songs that remind me of High School Football

Posted in Sports on January 9, 2010 by SweetEnlow

I had a wonderful experience with my high school football team (to bad my college experience could not have been duplicated).

An integral part of the high school football lifestyle is undoubtedly the locker room and with the locker room comes the music played.  Of course, in every locker room, you have the heavy metal dorks right next to the rap-lovers.  That being said, I did my best here to parlay the top (no discernable order however) all-around songs that remind me and likely my generation of the glory days!

ACDC – Thunderstruck

I’m pretty sure that since this song was released in the ’80s, it has been blasted throughout every high school locker room (as well as a favorite on every warm-up CD).

Collective Soul – Shine

Blasted by every lifted-truck on either side of the Mississippi, this song still strikes a nerve with me.  I choose “Shine,” but “December” by Collective could have just as easily been chosen.  Shout out to Nate Nebergall on this one!

Foo Fighters – Everlong

Just like Collective Soul, I could have chosen a number of Foo Fighters songs, but this one used to get me the most jacked (ugh!) before games… same with Baby tooDave Grohl is the shit in my opinion.

Guns ‘N Roses – Welcome to Jungle

No explanation needed on this one

Incubus – Pardon Me

This may have just been a Cascia thing, but this song was on just about ever mix CD I ever heard during my tenure at school.  Shout out to IVYMurph on this

Eminem – ‘Till I Collapse

A little different for the Cascia crew, but this song undoubtedly gets everyone pumped up.  I do not mind the rap, especially considering my graduating class’ theme song was Gangsta’s Paradise by Coolio (R.I.P.)

These songs I feel are the best representation of my Cascia experience.  We all have our own personal songs that bring to life past experiences ( I personally rocked Meat Loaf before every game), but I think these songs are a pretty good representation of the communal enviroment

Special Note to class of 2004 – Enrique Iglesias – pretty much any song he sang, except for “My Hero”

The likes of TayHa, SPri, and RPritch blared this latin sex symbol literally on repeat.  I like Enrique, but I can’t hear him without briefly recalling these guys and their semi-homoerotic behavior.

haha I love this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8PtBtRzcqM&feature=related

Cholesterol

Posted in Health on January 9, 2010 by SweetEnlow

I commented a few months back on Melody Peterson’s book investigating the policies of the major drug corporations.  Needless to say, it can make one upset and concerned for the general well-being of society.

I just read this article covering this exact manipulation of the health-care system for profit.  As important, the article does a great job debunking the idea that higher cholesterol automatically means higher heart risk and that one must lower it immediately (of course through drug companies statin products).

This is a great article and it should be read by all concerned with their health, drug companies, and the health care system. (I got this from Tommy John’s facebook page… you should friend him)

Why I don’t eat grains

Posted in Health on January 7, 2010 by SweetEnlow

I was at dinner with some close friends last night and they were inquiring into why I do not eat grains (followed by giving me a hard time about it).  I stated that I wasn’t going to explain it to them over a great dinner and affect the mood; however, this blog provides a great platform for the explanation.

One of the people I highly respect, Mark Sisson, says it best in his great book The Primal Blueprint:

“Ingesting grains (breads, pastas, crackers, snack foods, baked goods, rice, corn, cereals etc…) and other processed carbohydrates causes blood glucose (blood sugar) levels to spike.  This spike is a shock to our primal genes which are accustomed to natural, slow-burning foods.  Your pancreas compensates for this excess of glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream [too much glucose is toxic to the body - hence the importance of timely insulin shots for diabetics] by secreting excessive levels of insulin.  While insulin is an important hormone that delivers nutrients to muscle, liver, and fat cells for storage, excessive insulin released in the bloodstream causes glucose to be removed so rapidly and effectively that it can result in a “sugar crash”: mental and physical lethargy and (because the brain relies heavily on glucose to fuel it) a strong craving for quick replacement energy in the form of more high-carbohydrate food.” (24-25)  Additonally, after years of eating a grain based diet, one can become “insulin resistant” which a very serious health issue and requires its own post.

Eating poorly, as in lots of grains, “leads to a vicious cycle of another ill-advised meal, another excessive insulin response, and another corresponding blood glucose decline” (25)

I quoted Sisson here verbatim because there is way to say it more clearly or simply… except maybe that we weren’t evolved to eat a lot of grains and eating a non-evolutionary-based diet can cause many problems.

His book is beyond excellent and I recommend it to everyone.

Temple Bags

Posted in Lifestyle, Style on January 6, 2010 by SweetEnlow

As one grows older, traveling will likely become more important to them.  Most kids don’t have the same passion for traveling as a 30-year-old.  That being said, a vital part of traveling is maintaining the proper equipment… as in luggage.

Today, traveling is saturated with the generic Navy or Black roller bag.  However, I came across this particular site the other day that is offering an interesting take on duffel bags along with other pieces of luggage.

The company is entitled Temple Bags ( http://templebags.com ) and essentially what they did was take ol’ school military style bags (as well as material) and create new bags.  They are expensive, but relatively similar in price to other type bags of quality.

In addition to having nice luggage for actual traveling, igh-end luggage definitely stands out and can be a sign of taste.

Lastly, every man should have a quality overnight or weekend bag.  It can last forever.  It is probably more important than anything other luggage a man would own.

I got this site recommendation off of uncrate.com – I already commented on Uncrate, but you should really check it out.

Robin Thicke

Posted in Musik on January 6, 2010 by SweetEnlow

If you have not heard Robin Thicke, get yourself in line and get his music.  He is without a doubt one of the biggest up-and-comers in the music industry (R & B) with a unique sound and incredible voice.  He is like a cross between D’Angelo and Maxwell.

He just released a new CD entitled “Sex Therapy – The Experience” and it is excellent.  You should definitely check it out

Vegas … restricted version of course

Posted in Travel on January 4, 2010 by SweetEnlow
Forgive the lack of updating over the last week.  I just got back from Las Vegas.

To begin…

Day 1

My friends, Toys, had a hook-up at the Mandalay Bay with his cousin’s girlfriend.  She got us an incredible rate for the 4 days covering the 30th through 3 January.  Mandalay Bay is awesome with the only negative being that it is at the southern-most portion of the strip requiring a cab for just about anywhere.  I met up with my friends around 3 on the first day and, after taking a nap, went to a great sushi spot entitled Ra.  Following dinner, we went back to the Casino.  My friends “pre-gamed” in the room, but I went down to the casino.  After a breif stint of Blackjack, my friend Vest and I were wandering around (you really do get lost in Casinos) when we stumbled upon this girl giving out “free entry” tickets to the ultra-lounge on the top of Mandalay Bay, The Foundation Room.  After visiting Manhattan a thousand times and having to fend off the people on Las Vegas boulevard offering hookers, I was a little skeptical of this “free-entry.”  Regardless, we decided to try it out and amazingly we got in immediately – for free.  At that point in my life, it was arguably the coolest place I had ever been…that is until the last night.  Here is a picture of the view we were getting of the Strip from the outside part of the “lounge”

I was already aware that I really enjoy lounges – a nice mix of a bar and a club.  Great music mixed in with most people just hanging out, messing around, as opposed to breaking a sweat on the dance floor.  At about 4, I retreated to my room, but my ridiculous friends stayed up till about 7:30 playing craps downstairs.  This became the standard operating procedure for them for the entirety of the trip – their endurance was pretty incredible.

Day 2

After waking up to a pretty bad hangover, we all decided we needed to go to In & Out Burger.  If you haven’t been, or read Tucker Max’s book, they you don’t know how simply good this place is – believe the hype.  This day was New Years so we needed to buy tickets to the Mandalay Bay “Block Party” where we had access to 5 bars/lounges/clubs with a free drink at each.  Of course we put off the purchasing the tickets till about an hour before it was to begin and of course it was sold out.  It was 8 p.m. on New Years Ever and we had absolutely no plans!  After we ate at Hubert Keller’s “Burger bar,” we decided that we would start out in this lounge in the middle of the casino, EyeCandy, and we ended up staying there till 5 a.m.  It was basically a bar with a dance floor, but it was awesome.  But as stated earlier, I spotted all of my friends working up a pretty serious sweat.  While I went to sleep around 4, they cooled off with craps till 8 a.m.  Oddly enough, New Years was the worst of the 4 nights there.

Day 3

I actually felt great this morning, but some of my friends were undoubtedly hurting.  Today was to be the obligatory “suit-evening” where we visited arguably the best chef in the country’s restaurant, Thomas Keller’s Bouchon, followed by visiting the ”Wynn’s” hottest lounge, Blush.

Yes, Easley went to Cascia Hall.

I thought Keller’s place was great, but some of my friends disagreed… likely because for $792, you expect your taste buds to explode – at least when your 22.  Either way, we headed to this lounge in the Wynn, Blush, and it was, of course, awesome (another time we picked up free access from the street).  The Wynn is arguably the coolest Casino in Vegas and the places inside have to equal its proclaimed status.  It was here that we met some fellow Okies, as well as partying next to the infamous Perez Hilton.

The club in the Wynn is called Tryst and it was absurd.  I thought there was no way we were going to get in (which is why we headed to Blush), but since the Okies we met knew the people, we walked right in.  The club was, to be expected, ultra-packed, but even more impressive than the energy of the club was the club itself.  A half-moon shape with a dance floor both in and outside … all connected to a 50 foot waterfall.  I was blown away by this place.  Another 4 am return for me, another round of craps for my friends.

Day 4

Up until this day, the trip had been excellent.  However, this night made the trip the best I have ever had – hands down.  To start, I stumbled upon Bobby Flay’s “Mesa Grill” in Caesar’s and it was incredible – and cheap.  I wanted to check out Caesars mostly because of “The Hangover” , but it is also pretty highly rated etc…  It just sucked because the three that went had to walk for about 45 minutes – the Strip makes things look closer than they really are.  Regardless, my friends finally decided to ‘use our hook-up, the VIP coordinator at Mandalay Bay, to go to the newest club in town, Vanity, which only opened two nights before.  She told us that we have to show up around 9:30 to get in like we desire – of course, we didn’t show up till 10:15 and of course the line for the “VIP” line was 1 1/2 hours.  Procrastination ALMOST ruining the night seemed to be the story of the trip.  Either way, this club turned out to be one of the coolest things I have ever done.  In addition to it just being awesome, I was partying, literally, with Puff Daddy (or is it P. Diddy or just Diddy?), Nelly, and Floyd Mayweather – we were literally dancing right next to them.  It was awesome.  I had to roll out a little early for my flight was leaving Vegas at 6:30 and they have a mandatory check-in of two hours.  That made for an interesting airport experience.  I found out later that, after 3 nights of not really making any money playin craps, my friend Toys turned $20 into $1000 – he didn’t walk away from his heater

Things I learned in Vegas

Cash gets you whatever you want – honestly

Despite what Allan said, street people can be real “straight shooters”

A lot like high schoolers in Mexico, people come to Vegas with a particular mindset usually relinquishing all former inhibitions

All Vegas Clubs are required to have stupid-ass names

Believe the Vegas Hype

High School friends will rival any group of people you will ever meet
